Info: The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest mass of sand dunes in California. This dune system extends for more than 40 miles along the eastern edge of the Imperial Valley agricultural region in a band averaging five miles in width. It is roughly bordered on the west by the Coachella Canal which delivers Colorado River water to the fertile agricultural valley to the north. A major east-west route of the Union Pacific railroad skirts the eastern edge.

Location:

1. Take the 10fwy East past Palm Springs just about as you get to Indio take the 86S South.
2. Take the 86S past the Salton Sea, it joins with the 78. The 86 and 78 will run the same from here to Brawley.
3. Stay on the 86s / 78 through Westmoreland and Brawley
4. After you go through Brawley The 78 will join with the 115 and run on the same road. As as the highway makes its second big sweeping turn to the right, HWY 78 turns to the left. There is a sign that says Glamis. Take this turn slow.
5. Continue on the 78 to the Dunes, about 20 miles the first road you hit in Glamis is Gecko Road on the right.
6. After Gecko Road you will pass Osbourne Overlook (no camping) and proceed on the highway to vendor row and the Glamis Beach Store, the Wash road starts there next to rail road tracks.
